The primary outcomes are shown as “number (%)” and were compared among groups using Barnard’s test. Amniotic fluid (AF) cytokines, prostaglandins and fetal plasma cytokines are expressed as mean peak (SEM) in pg/ml. Hourly contraction area is expressed in mm Hg × s/h. Cytokines (IL-1β, TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8) and prostaglandins (PGE2 and PGF) were compared by using one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni’s correction. Statistical analyses were conducted using Intercooled STATA 8.2 for Windows 2000 (StataCorp) or SciStatCalc. P values of <0.05 are indicated in boldface. NS, P > 0.100.

b

Adverse outcome is a composite metric representing preterm labor or microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity with fetal bacteremia.

c

Preterm labor was defined as progressive cervical dilation associated with increased and sustained uterine activity.
