Objectives
Systemic, Therapeutic, Assessment, Resources, and Treatment (START) is an evidence-based crisis prevention and intervention model for individuals with intellectual developmental disorder (IDD) and behavioral health needs. Engaging with patients, families, and systems through consultation, training, and START therapeutic services results in a decrease in emergency service use and an increase in the quality of community mental health supports.
Methods
Jill Hinton, PhD, will describe the key principles and practices of the START model. In response to COVID-19, START programs were able to quickly adapt practices to a virtual platform, while maintaining the key principles of the model. These adaptations and their effectiveness will be described.
Results
Through this presentation, participants will gain an understanding of the START model and the effectiveness of START practices delivered virtually.
Conclusions
COVID-19 created opportunities to provide services and treatment virtually. Knowledge gained from the experiences of COVID-19 will lead child and adolescent psychiatrists to provide more effective telehealth treatment in the future.
