The spread of infectious agents among humans is exacerbated by high population densities in modern societies. It is also impractical to maintain adequate social distances in certain environments, where wearing masks alone may not provide adequate protection for reducing the spread of respiratory pathogens. The mass availability of public transport and increased globalization with travel and trade activities may act synergistically and allow rapid spread of infectious agents in the world population
