Enterococcus faecalis microcolonies persist on cardiac endothelial surfaces in rabbits given bacteremia without sedation. Biofilm microcolonies that were strikingly similar to those seen in Figs 3 and 4 were observed in rabbits followed out to 14 days post-inoculation. Rabbits showed no external signs of infection.
