Clustering mechanisms. Transcription factor (TF) clustering can occur via phase separation, thanks to multivalent interactions between intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) (left). Other mechanisms also exist; locally enhanced TF binding on highly accessible chromatin, locally anisotropic diffusion, and collapse of a TF-binding site.
