Raw (before motion and distortion correction) signal averaged within shells using data from the AP phase-encode direction. The single-subject data is from the scan with the highest (middle) and with the median motion-correction derived quality assessment score (right) in the cohort. The population-averaged raw signal shows clear slice-wise intensity modulation patterns that exhibit a b-value dependency. The population-average pattern is to some degree discernible in the low-motion subject but, in particular for subjects with more motion, the shell-average raw signal contains stripe patterns from motion-related artefacts.
