Expression levels of the icl1 gene in M. smegmatis grown on glucose, acetate, or octanoate. The WT strain of M. smegmatis strain containing the icl1::lacZ translational fusion plasmid pNCIIicl1 was grown aerobically to an OD₆₀₀ of 0.45 to 0.5 in 7H9 medium supplemented with 10 mM glucose, 10 mM acetate, or 2.5 mM octanoate as the sole carbon source. Cell-free crude extracts were used to measure β-galactosidase activity. All values provided were determined from three biological replicates.
