Hazard ratios of overall mortality were for one SD increment of serum retinol concentration. We used Cox proportional hazard regression models to estimate HRs and 95% CIs. Models were adjusted for age, BMI, serum total and serum HDL cholesterol, cigarettes smoked per day, years of smoking, alcohol intake, intervention assignment, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, history of CVD, and history of diabetes. P value for interaction: according to the likelihood test to assess the statistical significance of the cross-product term entered into the Cox proportional hazard regression model.
