Three hydroxyl groups of the inositol ring (positions 3, 4 and 5) of PI are accessible for phosphorylation by lipid kinases. Interconversions between various phosphoinositides occurs through lipid kinases (coloured in blue) and lipid phosphatases (coloured in red). There are multiple kinases and phosphatases with different locations in the cells.
