The relative number of positive and negative displacements in each BMI bin at (a) six weeks, (b) six months, (c) 12 months and (d) 24 months obtained from the College study dataset. The relative number of positive and negative displacements in each BMI bin is calculated as (number of positive displacements − number of negative displacements)/(number of positive displacements + number of negative displacements). This relative number will be 1 or −1 if all displacements at a particular BMI bin are in the same direction (either positive or negative). If a particular BMI bin has mixed displacement directions then the relative number will be between −1 and 1. A positive relative number indicates that there are more positive displacements than negative displacements and vice versa (refer to section 3: Results).
