Definition Keeping a defined space between individuals to prevent viral transmission The act of avoiding contact with all others and staying home; required for individuals who do not have symptoms but may have been exposed to an infectious disease The act of staying home and/or in an isolation unit, and avoiding all contact with others; required for individuals who have tested positive for an infectious disease or show disease symptoms
Application during COVID-19
  • Staying 1–2 meters away from others not in your household

  • Greeting others with a wave, a nod, or a bow instead of handshakes, hugs, or kisses

  • Communicating via telephone or video-chat

  • Going out in off-peak hours

  • Receiving deliveries of essential goods, instead of shopping in-person

  • Staying at home 10–14 days (depending on regional guidelines) after coming in contact with someone with an infectious disease or after returning from travel to a high-risk area

  • Staying away from other people as much as possible

  • Watching for signs and symptoms of disease and self-isolating if you feel ill

  • Staying home and away from household members for 10–14 days (depending on regional guidelines) if showing disease symptoms and/or tested positive for an infectious disease (regardless of symptom presentation)

  • Not leaving home until symptoms have dissipated

  • Treatment in hospital isolation if symptoms are severe
