Table 1.

Variable definition for the quantitative data

Variable Definition Categorisation
Knowledge of progestin-only injectable contraceptives (Depo-Provera, Noristerat and Sayana Press)

A computation of three knowledge questions for progestin-only injectable contraceptives (Depo-Provera, Noristerat and Sayana Press):

(1) the type of device used to administer the progestin-only injectable contraceptive;

(2) the site where the progestin-only injectable contraceptive can be administered on the body; and

(3) the reinjection frequency of the progestin-only injectable contraceptive [15]

A dichotomised variable was created and coded as 1 if the PMV answered all aspects of each question correctly, and 0 if the PMV answered any part of the three questions incorrectly
Specific injectable contraceptive knowledge variable

A computation of knowledge questions on the specific contraceptive specifically:

(1) the type of device used to administer the specific injectable contraceptive;

(2) the site where specific injectable contraceptive can be administered on the body; and

(iii) the reinjection frequency of specific injectable contraceptive [15]

A dichotomised variable was created and coded as 1 if the PPMV answered all aspects of each question correctly, and 0 if the PPMV answered any part of the three questions incorrectly
Side effect

This was PMVs’ spontaneous response to the question “what are the common side effects of progestin-only injectable contraceptives.”

The seven possible responses include: weight gain, change in menstruation, delayed return to fertility, dizziness, decrease in sex drive, mild skin irritation, and headaches

A dichotomised variable was created and coded as 1 (i.e., good) if the PMV named at least 4 of the 7 common side effects and 0 (i.e., poor) if the PMV named less than 4 of these side effects
