^aCell size of D39 wild type reduced when grown at 34°C or 40°C compared to 37°C (P < 0.05). A similar size trend was recorded in the absence of gdhA (P < 0.05). While no difference was observed between D39 and ΔgdhA at 37°C, ΔgdhA cells were significantly smaller than the wild type at 34°C or 40°C. No difference between the wild type and complemented mutant strain was seen. The standard error shows the mean of three different experiments for at least 50 individual cell measurements.
