Scheme of citrullination and PAD2 structure. (A) A simplified equation describing that PAD2 catalyzes the citrullination of a peptidylarginine residue in the presence of calcium ions (Ca²⁺). (B) Transition of inactivated PAD2 to activated PAD2. Ca1 and Ca6 in PAD2 protein are permanently occupied by Ca²⁺; when the levels of Ca²⁺ in cytoplasm are elevated, Ca2, Ca3, Ca4 and Ca5 are filled with Ca²⁺ for PAD2 activation.
