It is possible to observe a decrease in O2 production followed by an increase in nitric oxide levels in the kidney and a decrease in NO levels in the heart. Right side: effect of vitamin C treatment on mitochondrial behavior after ischemia/reperfusion protocol. After treatment with vitamin C (early or late), it was possible to note an improvement in mitochondrial function, modulation of mitochondrial dynamic genes, and a significant increase in NO levels in both the kidney and heart.
