(Left to right): images of HDL, LDL, and VLDL particles fused (red arrow) to individual large unilamellar vesicles (LUV) made from 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DOPC). Non-fused lipoprotein particles are exemplarily indicated by the yellow arrow. Lipoprotein particle incorporation into the LUV membranes was confirmed through recording data under different electron-beam incident angles (0°, 30°, 60°, not shown), thus excluding an accidental overlay of signals originating from different layers of the vitrified ice. Images were acquired under low-dose conditions (20 e/Ų). Scale bars are 50 nm.
