Iron overload condition does not restore virulence of the LMA vaccine. (A and B) Swiss-Webster mice (n = 5/group) were injected with 75 μg of FeCL2·4H2O 1 h prior to infection and then infected with either the LMA vaccine or the KIM/D27 strain. Losses in body weight and mortality were monitored for 14 days; animals without iron overload were used as controls. Kaplan-Meier analysis with log-rank (Mantel-Cox) test was used for analysis of animal survival. Two-way ANOVA with Tukey’s post hoc test was used to calculate significant differences in body weight loss between vaccine groups. Asterisks represent the statistical significance between two groups, indicated by a line for panel A and between LMA and the indicated dose of KIM/D27 in panel B. Since absence or presence of iron did not affect animal body weight, combined data were plotted. Two biological replicates were performed. *, P < 0.05; **, P < 0.01; ***, P < 0.001; ****, P < 0.0001.
