Retinal release of rhodopsin versus diving depth. Retinal release rates and diving depths show for species from four vertebrate clades. The diving depths of terrestrial relatives are set at zero. The ocean is divided into three zones: epipelagic (<∼150 m), mesopelagic (∼150–1,000 m), and bathypelagic (>1,000 m, also called aphotic) (Warrant and Locket 2004).
