Simplified graphical explanation of the population equations (1)–(6) . The three populations (I 0 + I 1), (j + + j ) and (k + + k ) arising from the intensity at small angles, the elastic incoherent intensity and the inelastic incoherent intensity are considered. Arrows represent the possible scattering routes. Accordingly, there are arrows from the small-angle intensity towards the other two intensities with probabilities Σi and Σii. Multiple scattering contributions are represented by circular arrows. Importantly, there are two routes to the inelastic intensity with the probability Σii that amplify its population considerably.
