Representation of the Upper Limits of Normal for Men and Women by Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Along With Proposed Goals for Left Ventricular Hypertrophy Regression by Pharmacologic Intervention

Men Women
Upper Normal Limit Goal of Reduction Upper Normal Limit Goal of Reduction
Echocardiography 125 g/m2 ≤106 g/m2 110 g/m2 ≤94 g/m2
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging  72 g/m2  ≤62 g/m2  62 g/m2 ≤53 g/m2

Note: the overestimation of echocardiographic‐determined left ventricular mass is well recognized and has been reported by many authors. The ability to resolve the endocardium and distinguish finite trabecular myocardium vs a coalescing of the trabeculations, as well as complete interrogation of 3‐dimensional mass vs 2‐dimensional estimations help to explain the generally lower quantitated mass by cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging.
