A scale of behavioral sophistication

Intelligent behavior is a continuum, which can be decomposed into major transitions (in the cybernetic tradition) ranging from purely passive behavior to responses to past stimuli that require diverse degrees of sophistication. Where a given novel system lands on this continuum cannot be determined by anatomical or phylogenetic data, but must be empirically determined by behavioral experiments. Figure after that in [44].
