Overall research design. (a) The material preparation process consisted of collection of cases from DUMC and outside institutions, followed by manual annotation and QC by expert renal pathologists. (b) The training process included selection and augmentation of training samples, followed by model optimization for segmenting the glomeruli. (c) Predictions were made based on sequential patches, which were concatenated together to recover a WSI full field-of-view prediction. (d) The model performance was further investigated by comparing to the standard-of-care report indicating the number of glomeruli based on visual assessment.
