Methods	RCT (multicentre; Uganda, Malawi)
Participants	Children aged 2 months to 12 years (median 37 months) with haemoglobin level < 6 g/dL and severity features
Interventions	Complex. The main intervention involved receipt of immediate blood transfusion with 20 mL/kg or 30 mL/kg. Three other randomised analyses also investigated: immediate compared with no immediate transfusion; provision of postdischarge micronutrients; and postdischarge prophylaxis with trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole
Outcomes	Primary outcome: 28‐day mortality
