Methods Design: RCT
Setting: Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt
Participants Inclusion criteria: age 20 to 40 years, singleton pregnancy, gestational age ≥ 37 weeks, scheduled cesarean section
Exclusion criteria: multiple gestation, obstetric complications such as pre‐eclampsia, diabetes mellitus, antepartum haemorrhage, PROM and preterm delivery, malformed baby, patients in labour, patients with contraindication to spinal anaesthesia, refusal to participate in the study.
Interventions Intervention (n = 200): dexamethasone 6 mg every 12 hours for 4 doses with the last dose at least 24 hours before scheduled caesarean section
Control (n = 200): 2 mL normal saline 0.9% every 12 hours for 4 doses with the last dose at least 24 hours before scheduled caesarean section
Outcomes
  • Apgar score < 7

  • TTN

  • RDS

  • Nasal oxygen

  • CPAP

  • Mechanical ventilation

  • Total incubation admissions

  • Neonatal mortality

  • Duration of neonatal stay in hospital
