Schematic overview of the testing routine. Three meniscus states were investigated in this study: intact, with a posterior medial meniscus root tear (PMMR tear) and after medial meniscectomy (MM). Two different loading conditions derived from an ovine gait cycle were applied to the joints: swing phase conditions (250 N axial loading and 12° initial deflection) and stance phase conditions (1000 N axial loading and 5° initial deflection) (Taylor et al., 2006; Taylor et al., 2011). Each meniscus state was first tested under swing phase conditions followed by tests under stance phase conditions. Both conditions were tested first directly after load application (T0) and second after 20 min resting under the axial loading (T20). In total, each knee underwent 12 test runs.
