Leptin functions in mice during gestation, lactation, and adulthood. (A) In the gestational period, leptin mediates neurogenesis and proliferation of other brain cells (not limited to gestation). (B) During the immediate postnatal (lactational) period, mice undergo a leptin surge that is critical for the outgrowth of projections from feeding circuit essential neurons.
