Schematic of an 8/20μs impulse generator utilized to simulate lightning currents. The capacitor bank (C1, C2, C3, C4) are charged, when the spark gap fires, the charge then flows through Rw and Lw which shape the rise and fall-time. This high-current impulse is then delivered to the Test Conductor or Object as if it were ‘struck by lightning’.
