Time allocated to each topic and students’ self-reported learning in the third semester. Working from the syllabus and notes about each class meeting, we allocated all time spent in class to one of the five categories shown (A), with numbers above the bars representing the absolute time in hours. Students’ take-aways were binned into the three main topics of the course (Table 2) or a fourth category of “other” (B). The amount of time allocated (C) and the number of student take-aways (D) are shown on a week-by-week basis.
