Genomic DNAs from S. aureus isolates were digested with HindIII, and Southern blots were probed with cloned DNA fragments common to the cap5 and cap8 gene clusters (cap5ABCD and cap5LMNOP), a DNA fragment specific to the cap5 gene cluster (cap5IJK), or a DNA fragment specific to the cap8 gene cluster (cap8HIJK).
