Fig. (4) — Regulation of glutamate homeostasis by N-acetylcysteine (NAC). NAC stimulates glutamate efflux by activating the cysteine:glutamate antiporter (Sxc^–) thereby enhancing the endogenous activation of mGlu2 receptors. In addition, NAC enhances the clearance of synaptic glutamate by inducing GLT-1.
