The great Arborvitae, the tree of life. Note its size and girth when compared to the photographer, as well as the many creases and holes in the buttress system. These trees are ideal homes for many species and are only present in older trees. Apart from being an ideal habitat for many species, large old trees such as this one continue to sequester carbon while producing large amounts of beneficial aerosols. This particular specimen of Western redwood, Thuya plicata, was photographed by TJ Watt in the old-growth forests of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada
