Relationship between the gut microbiome and senescent cells. (1) Metabolites of the microbiome or those produced by microbial biotransformation of dietary components, can directly influence cellular stressors and stress response capacity which can ultimately attenuate the development and progression of cellular senescence. (2) Cellular senescence can contribute to functional dysfunctions in the intestinal cells, and SASP secreted by these cells can augment aberrant intestinal inflammation, immune cell activation, and gut dysbiosis.
