Primary structure of TRP ion channels. In general, all TRP channels are located in the cellular lipid bilayer and consist of six transmembrane subunits (S1–S6) with a pore region considered fundamental for the influx of cations, especially Ca2+ or Na+. The particularities which appear at the carboxyl- (C-terminal) or amino-terminus (N-terminal) (e.g., ankyrin repeats at the latter) differ among the families of TRP channels and confer specific properties to each receptor. COOH: carboxylic acid group; NH2: amino group.
