Epoxide 4i was isolated in 47% yield.

The reaction was carried out with 5 mol % catalyst.

The other diastereoisomer was obtained with er 86:14.

Reactions carried out with 0.1 mmol of 1, 0.11 mmol of NBS, and 2.5 mol % 2 in toluene (0.2 M) at 0 °C for 16–96 h. Yields refer to pure isolated products. dr values were determined by NMR analysis of crude reaction mixtures, and er values were determined by HPLC on a chiral stationary phase.
