5-ASA alters ROS gene expression in CUC patients. Colon biopsies were taken during endoscopy from normal patients (N) or active CUC patients with (5-ASA) or without (CUC) 5-ASA. Only CUC patients with comparative UCDAI and H&E inflammatory scores were used in these experiments (see Fig., Supplemental Digital Content 2, http://links.lww.com/IBD/A188). qRT-PCR was performed on mRNA from whole biopsy tissue for the ROS gene catalase (A) and several ROS depleting and enhancing genes (B). * indicate where a significant change was seen with 5-ASA treatment. n ≥ 10 in each group.
