Structure of intestinal epithelial layer. The epithelial layer is organized into crypt and villi, where a single villus is surrounded by multiple crypts. The crypts generate a continuous stream of cells of various types that differentiate and migrate upward toward the tip of the villus (e.g., transiently amplifying cells, enterocytes, and goblet cells) as well as at the base of crypts (e.g., Paneth cells).
