For all box plots, each dot represents the average value of differentially expressed gene found in the comparison; centre lines denote medians; box limits denote 25th–75th percentile (Q1-Q3); whiskers are drawn up to the smallest or largest observed value that is still within 1.5 times the interquartile range below the first quartile or above the third quartile, respectively; all other observed points are plotted as outliers. p values were calculated by two-tailed Student’s t test.
