Localization of TolA in the absence of FtsN depends on other Tol-Pal proteins and CpoB. Cells were grown for ∼3.5 mass doublings to OD600 = 0.5 to 0.6 in M9-maltose medium with 37 μM IPTG. Arabinose was either omitted (C, F) or was added to 0.02% when cultures reached OD600= 0.3 (all others). Bar equals 2 μm. Arrowheads point at division sites at which GFP-TolA (A) or GFP-M-TolAII (E) fluorescence appears relatively low.
