Locus coeruleus noradrenergic neurons (LC) may be involved in the maintenance of muscle tone, and posterior hypothalamus histamine neurons (HA) may be involved in the maintenance of alertness in cataplexy. In quiet waking, non-Hcrt excitatory inputs are reduced. Thicker input symbolizes more release of neurotransmitters. Net level of neuronal activity is given schematically for each state.
