AgNPs are known to mediate their direct cytotoxic effects through increased generation of reactive species inside the target cells. Besides, the AgNP-generated oxidative stress can also affect the cellular metabolism and certain pathways of interest (in this case, the anti-cancer metabolites) thereby enhancing indirect cytotoxicity. Gut microbe-CRC interactions can further assist in understanding the role of gut bacterial metabolites (indirect effects of ROS) on CRC metabolism.
