Neurovascular Unit Capillary (NVU) in control non-diabetic models. Panels (A) (cross section), (B) (longitudinal section) and (C) (cross section) depict the normal NVU composed of the endothelial cell (EC), pericyte foot processes (Pcfp), astrocyte foot processes (ACfp) and the ramified microglia cell (rMGC). Note in panel (A) that the rMGC is probing the NVU to surveil for any injury to the NVU. Note how tightly the Pcfp and the ACfp adhere and abut to the basement membrane of the ECs. Additionally, note the ACfp are pseudo colored yellow in panels (A,C) and reveal their electron lucent cytoplasm in panel (B), and the nanometer glymphatic space (gS) is pseudo colored green in panel (C).
