The average lifespan of the living (ALL) is the average of the lifespans that end in the upper right triangle. These deaths represent the future deaths of the living population. The deaths in the left triangle reflect the past deaths of living cohorts. The horizontal bands illustrate the unequal number of cohorts that contribute deaths at different ages at death (e.g., 40 cohorts for age 40 and 60 cohorts for age 60).
