Model for growth regulation in developing florets. In UFM (red), high cytokinin and sugar availability promote growth and metabolism, including synthesis of new cell walls (orange). In LFM (blue), low sugar availability activates the SnRK1/FLZ pathway to repress growth and increase catabolism. Starch accumulates at the UFM/LFM boundary and may supply sugar to the UFM and/or be important for boundary formation.
