Brain responses associated with Information-theoretic variables provide separate evidence for each of the probability distributions in the colored boxes. From left to right, the three different context models (sentence, word, and sublexical) update incrementally as each phoneme arrives. The cost of these updates is reflected in the brain response related to surprisal. Representations also include probabilistic representations of words and upcoming phonemes, reflected in brain responses related to entropy.
