[A] An increase of TNF-α and IL-1β are described in human NEC. RT-PCR demonstrates a robust increase in the expression of these cytokines (p= 0.04 and p= 0.07, respectively). This was repeated in triplicate.

[B] Increased intestinal epithelial apoptosis occurs in NEC. We demonstrate an increase in apoptosis in enterocytes treated with LPS. The control enterocytes have few apoptotic (red) cells, while the LPS treated enterocytes have many more apoptotic cells. The nuclei are stained with DAPI (blue). Scale bar 50 μm.
