NTHi and P. aeruginosa form polymicrobial biofilms in vitro. Biofilms of P. aeruginosa mPA 08-31 (pUCP19+mCherry+) (A), NTHi 86-028NP (PGM1.1+gfp) (B), and NTHi and P. aeruginosa (C) on abiotic glass surfaces are shown. Inoculation of NTHi preceded P. aeruginosa by 12 h, and both organisms grew for an additional 6 h at 37°C in 5% CO2 (18 h total). Imaged at ×40 magnification; the scale bars represent 50 μm.
