Sequences of 30-bp DNA fragments used in this study. These sequences were used to characterize binding preference of E. coli HU (Castaing et al., 1995). The sequences differ in the presence of a 2-nucleotide gap (A), a nicked phosphate backbone (B, indicated by ↓), and a fully complementary sequence (C). The phosphate backbone is indicated with a solid line while hydrogen bonds between complementary base pairs are indicated with a dashed line.
