Abnormalities of mouse models of PKAN. Four PKAN mouse models with altered movement, size, life span, fertility, and vision are described. Although the PKAN phenotype is least severe in Pank2^−/− mice, the model is considered ideal for studying cellular etiology of PKAN. Pank1^−/Ppank2^−/− mice present more severe morphological and behavioral abnormalities, not all of which recapitulate the PKAN phenotype in humans.
