Definition of abbreviations: IQR = interquartile range; MV = mechanical ventilation; ns = not significant; TTDN50% = temporary transvenous diaphragm neurostimulation every other breath; TTDN100% = temporary transvenous diaphragm neurostimulation every breath.

Esophageal pressure, plateau pressure, driving pressure, and transpulmonary plateau pressure were measured at the beginning and the end of the study. Esophageal pressure was measured at the end of inspiration. Transpulmonary plateau pressure was measured during the end-inspiratory plateau. Driving pressure was calculated as end-inspiratory plateau pressure − end-expiratory pressure.
