Schematic representation of the metabolic pathways that are putatively altered in follicular fluids as age advances. Thick and short arrows indicate the variation in metabolite concentrations in follicular fluids from women with advanced age compared with their concentrations in the young age group. A dysfunctional mitochondrial metabolism could explain the observed accumulation of identified metabolites in the follicular fluids of advanced age women.
